The Brights 2026

“Forms in Flux” 2026, was a 2 person exhibit at Hammerfriar Gallery in Healdsburg CA. Laura Van Duren presented ceramic sculptures and Vander Meer displayed an ongoing series of painted wood sculptures and paintings on canvas. The abstract forms are a continual exploration of her organic forms inspired by nature. The relief-sculptures are embellished with monotype paper that she created in her Mazatlan MX studio as well acrylic paint and fabrics. The work reflected an interest in transformation, accumulation, and the quiet logic of organic systems—where form emerges through process, and meaning develops through making.

Breakout 2022

Breakout is an expression of repression and isolation leading to escape and hope.

Restricted by the Pandemic, I retreated like so many others, to my studio. I was happy to have all that uninterrupted time to begin a new series.

I was printing on paper but couldn’t get the richness of colors I so dearly wanted to express. I felt the need to use bright intense color which I hoped would bring some cheer to others as well as myself. Using acrylic paint, I set up a grid in which to frame my colors and forms. The grid was a metaphor for the confinement of isolation and the unknown.

I have always been interested in color so I worked with new palettes of color combinations and color saturations. The forms I have been working with for the past several years consisted of abstracted forms of plant life and organic forms. These forms I have used throughout my career in sculpture and installation as well as mixed media on paper. My new garden in Sonoma County are constantly providing a renewed attachment to plant life and a much needed sense of calm.
